Abraham is a retired medic of 35 years experience who runs this clinic as an outreach to poor Papuan families in the region, he also has a smaller outreach clinic afurther 20 minutes away.

Buzz Off has been helping Father Abraham for two years with a steady supply of antimalarial medicines. Over the coming months we want to increase this to include access to RDTs, LLIN nets, Haemoglobin testing kits, and other support medicines.

The video above explains a little about this clinic and how Buzz Off will be helping to support it in its fight against malaria. Donations towards this project can be sent via the Australian Mercy secure site.

In May the monsoons will come again to Asia and with the increased rain will come a sharp increase in the numbers of cases of Malaria as mosquito populations soar. In order to prepare for this event Buzz Off has commenced distribution of Artesunate into remote clinic inside Karen and Shan State.

Artesunate is one of the most reliable drugs for the treatment of severe falciparum malaria – usually it is used as part of a combination therapy where it is paired with other antimalarials such as Doxycycline, Mefloquine or Chloroquine. Whilst other antimalarials such as Doxycycline, Mefloquine and Chloroquine are cheap and readily accessible Artesunate is not. It costs up to 7 times the price of ordinary antimalarials and secure supplies need to be obtained as there is much fake Artesunate on the market.

In the coming weeks 700 boxes of Artesunate (8,400 tablets) to remote clinics that are serving IDP camps in Karen and Shan State. Each box has enough Artesunate to treat one adult person for up to 3 days, some cases of severe falciparum malaria need much more than this. Injectable drugs also need to be bought for those patients who are bought to the clinic unconscious and unable to swallow a tablet.

These medicines together with follow up deliveries of other antimalarial medications and support medicines will help to save hundreds of lives; but much more medicine is needed to treat the cases of Malaria that will emerge with the coming monsoons. Buzz Off needs to raise $20,000 in order to save 5,000 lives. We are also receiving requests for help from remote clinics in West Papua (Irian Jaya – Indonesia), Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. Your donation can help save a life.

You can help by donating to Buzz Off through our on-line store a $10 donation will help us to buy nearly three boxes of Artesunate or support medicines. Donations for these medicines are tax deductible for Australian donors and if you require a tax deductible receipt you should make your donation through the Australian Mercy Secure Website select Buzz Off Meds from the drop down menu.

Malaria is a killer – your donation will help to make a real difference in someone’s life.

It is hard to get feed back from some areas as they lie deep inside Burma and reports are scarce, however on this trip David was able to connect with two team leaders who were able to confirm 2 very exciting pieces of news.

In some IDP areas deep inside Burma malaria infections have been reduced by over 50% sine Buzz Off has been able to provide support for local clinics and LLIN mosquito nets for distribution. This is an exciting result and we are very happy to see that kind of affective result.

The second report came from the team of Doctors we are providing support for in Shan state their report was the malaria infections in some areas has been reduced by 65% since Buzz Off has been able to resource them with medicines training and access to LLIN nets.

This is an amazing piece of feed back. Buzz Off is working well and people’s lives in remote areas are being saved as a result of the campaign.

Your donation to Buzz Off is making a difference and we need your support. On-line donations to Buzz Off’s work in Myanmar can be made through the Australian Mercy website here you can use either credit card or PayPal.

The small grant pays for a small quantity of nets and treatments to start the business off.

The business owners, who have been trained by Buzz Off in net treatment procedures, operate in remote areas and treat and retreat nets for the cost of the treatment plus a small fee. They also sell generic nets which they can also treat.

The idea behind the business is that people with mosquito nets will have access to treatments to make sure their nets remain affective, and generic treated nets will also be available to families who can afford to buy them.

We expect to know in 6 months how the pilot project has gone.

On-line donations to Buzz Off’s work in Myanmar can be made through the Australian Mercy website here you can use either credit card or PayPal.

Buzz Off has been supplying assistance these clinics for three years and has increased its commitment as the under resourced clinics have no other means of acquiring suitable medication for severe malaria.

The clinics involved are the only source of medical assistance that is available to groups of remote villages in areas where Pf malaria kills hundreds of people every year. An on-site audit of medications used by the clinics showed that the only medication they were able to afford was Chloroquine which suitable for the treatment of P vivax but not P falciparum which is the cause of cerebral malaria and other deadly complications.

Buzz Off will continue to support these clinics each year. We want to thank our donors who made funds available for this project.

An unexpected side-effect of recent flooding in parts of Pakistan has been that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters. Because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water has taken so long to recede, many trees have become cocooned in spiders’ webs.

People in this part of Sindh have never seen this phenomenon before, but they also report that there are now less mosquito’s than they would expect, given the amount of stagnant, standing water that is around. It is thought that the mosquito’s are getting caught in the spiders’ webs thus reducing the risk of malaria, which would be one blessing for the people of Sindh, facing so many other hardships after the floods.
